I’ve already !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I took while I was there, but I have a bunch more that I figured some of you would enjoy. Never really thought I’d visit Siberia, let alone spend two months there. I usually get asked what it was like there. It’s hard to describe, but hopefully these pictures give you an idea. If I had to pick a word to describe it, I would just call it wild.

It was certainly an interesting experience. Being functionally illiterate really made me appreciate bilingual signs.

The first pictures look so summer like. Then they look like the dead of winter within two months.

And I’m surprised that Carl’s Jr. is there. Not at all surprised by McDs or KFC though, those two are everywhere.

It was wild. It also got up to the upper 80s when I was there. One of my really good friends, at the time, went back in December and said it was miserable.

This was right after Russia annexed Crimea, and we didn’t run into people that didn’t like Americans. The people in my class were also fun to hang out with, we had 3 Russian speakers in it, so that really helped.

They should use that ad campaign here as well.

April/May was good enough for me, plus I get to say I’ve been to Siberia. Even if it was eastern Siberian.

There was a 50/50 chance that you would get your beer severed warm. We learned quickly and basically only ordered liquor and mixers. As well as a bucket of ice.

For the most part the fast food tasted the same. Except for the fact you could get a beer at KFC, which, obviously, I did.

A lot of people smoke there, not sure what the cool Russians smoke. At the time it was about 35 Rubles to the dollar, so half of those packs were only $1. You could smoke in bars, I thought that was wild. One of the guys in our group didn’t drink, so we’d get a hookah. We smoked a lot of that.

Nope, my dad’s initials are JM, as are mine.

It would have been cool if we had a bunch of mutual acquaintances though. I’m always open to more car friends.

I can read Cyrillic but I know very little Russian anymore...I was surprised to see how much I could understand.

Also the car with the bear on the hood should be it’s own post. Is that as redneck there as it would be here?

I got pretty good at learning letters and translating some words. There was a Mexican restaurant there and translating between Russian and Spanish was rough. I was also surprised by the prevalence of English.

I think it’s pretty redneck. I was walking around town that day with the Russian girl in our class and she also took a picture cause apparently it was that outrageous. I did make a post for it, a while ago.

Also you just gave me flashbacks to high school - we would have days where you’d get extra credit in language classes for not speaking English all day. For the Russian students it always turned into a weird game of telephone until you got to a kid who had already finished their Spanish studies and would translate to English for the teacher.

I mean it was like over a year ago, so I don’t expect you to remember it all. Unless your stalking me, in that case, I’m very disappointed.

I always liked doing ridiculous things to my car; I had Jared Fogle’s head in my rear glass because it was funny. This was 2007/2008 before it came out he was an awful human.

I always wanted a car with steelies so I could get Walmart spinners. That goal might be fulfilled some day. Or I’ll just get another M car, who knows.

There was a Russian girl in our class who spoke 4 languages fluently: Russian, English, Portuguese, and Spanish. She might be one of the most incredible people I’ve ever met, but I digress. She could talk to everyone in the class in their native language, apart from the Turkish girl.

Looks pretty cold over there. Things have obviously improved there. When I was a young guy you would read, and see photos of people in Russia waiting in line “hoping” to be able to buy some bread.
